The AppleTV has been out for a while and the iPhone is just around the corner. But I like to think ahead. Will there be another new product announcement later this year or in early 2008? I doubt it. I think that Apple is going to focus heavily on upgrading the AppleTV and iPhone just as they did with the early iPods. Remember, the iPod wasn’t always a huge hit, but after a bit of TLC the iPod is the most popular portable music player on the planet. Apple has already stated that they are going to slowly upgrade both the iPhone and Apple TV’s software to give consumers the “greatest possible experience”. So that’s probably what we can expect to see from Apple in the comming 12-18 months.

We’ve all heard the rumors about wireless iPods. Esentially an iPhone without the cellular capabilities… aka a non-sucky Zune o.O But I want something a bit different. I want a dataPod.

You may be thinking, what the hell is a dataPod and why do I need one. A dataPod could be a way to simplify your personal backup needs. Similar to a 802.11n and/or Bluetooth enabled iPod with no music playback capability a dataPod would be a small sleek device for all your backup needs. When a sync is initiated a backup of your important data is wirelessly created on the dataPod. Syncing data wouldn’t be the only way to use your dataPod. The dataPod could be accessed just like a traditional external hard drive as well.

Why doesn’t a traditional external hard drive suffice? Because they are a pain. There are always papers littering my desk which makes me dig around to find things. Another drawback is that sometimes the device I’m looking for isn’t sitting right there. Half the time it’s on a shelf across the room or in my backpack. Not only that, but once you find your external hard drive you’ll need to find your cable(s) and plug it in. Then, when you want to sit on the couch with your MB or MBP you have to unplug it, along with your power adapter, any other USB/FireWire devices, ethernet cables, headphones, and external monitors. Thats right, I’m lazy! And using a traditional external hard drive just adds one more unneeded cable to my life.

Picture this. You’re about to leave the office at the end of the day and remember that you forgot to backup. You know that if you dig through your bag to find your external drive and take the time to hook it up you’ll not only miss the buss, but be late for dinner! If you had a dataPod things would be much different. Just initiate a sync and no matter where your dataPod is you won’t have to worry. The dataPod would wake up from sleep and begin the backup. The possibilities are endless. Configure your dataPod to be public and let everyone in a meeting or your home access it. dataPods would also be able to sync with other dataPods. While eating lunch with a friend, the two of you could whip out your dataPods and transfer pictures of your recent camping trip together. The possibilities are endless.

In a world where having your digital data with you readily available to share with your friends a dataPod would be a great device. Furthermore, the dataPod would help consumers keep up with their busy lives ensure their data is safe and sound. I know that some of the functionality of the dataPod can be duplicated using an AirPort Extreme and an external hard drive, but thats not portable. What do you think? Would a dataPod be something you’d be interested in?ebony masturbating

I hope you all understand and will continue to read my work here at Keynote 2 Keynote. As always, the best way to keep uptodate with new content is to subscribe to my RSS feed.

Apple sure does like to post new Get A Mac commercials in groupings of 3. This time around the powers to be are really dogging on Vista. Two of the three videos come right out and directly mock Vista! Each of the three videos have their pros and cons which I’ll discuss starting with my favorite, “Choose a Vista”.

[Choose a Vista]

I feel this is the funniest of the three. The multiple versions of Vista just seems wacky to me. Infact, I thought that Professional and Home versions of XP was stupid. At least PC could have just flipped a coin back then :) But instead he has to construct a big wheel of doom that even Bob Barker would be jealous of. It’s great that Mac plays along with PC and claps in anticipation knowing that no matter what happens PC is screwed. However, “Choose A Vista” misses a great opportunity to drive the point home. This isn’t the first time that this has happened. Had I been the writer for this commercial I would have chosen a different ending. The wheel would have landed on a stripped down version of Vista and PC would thrown a fit or it would land on the most expensive version and PC would make a commend about having to sell his kidney or something. I think that would have captured the feeling of most consumers a little better.

[Genius]

I may be wrong, but I think that this is the first time that Apple has mentioned the Geniuses (A what? lol) in one of their Get A Mac commercials. It’s nice to see that the ads are covering all the bases and thoroughly pointing out the advantages of Macs. I’m hard pressed to find any faults with this video other than I think the Genius should have made a joke about PC’s puny hard drive *snicker* On a side note, was it just me or did the Genius look a bit like Sarah Jessica Parker at first?

[Party is Over]

Once PC started pouting about all his problems since upgrading to Vista a song instantly popped into my head, “Its my party and I’ll cry if I want to…” Anyways, I thought that it was slightly unclear if the party guest really thought that the party was fun or if he was just being nice. It sure looked like a dud of a party to me! At the end either the guest was trying to blow PC off or Apple wanted to show how PC’s are all work and no play. I think the writers should have committed to one of the two posibilities and added a bit of salt to the wound :) Besides from that, I think PC’s sarcasim was great! “Whoopie for the whole entire world”.

Well there you have it. Three new Get A Mac commercials to hold you over for a few weeks. As always you can find higher quality versions of the Get A Mac ads on Apples website. If you haven’t already had enough of PC and Mac head on over to The Apple Blog. They’ve got a great article about Get A Mac ads that aren’t featured on TV or Apples website.

I especially like the last point! “They started as a couple of geeks in a garage, then got rich and changed the world. Damn it, why have a garage, how come we can’t do that!!!” I can totally relate :) If only I could invent life changing devices in my garage… what a life.

Personally I hate that Apple can never seem to gain any significant market share. If only they could start putting the hurt on Microsoft. A good hefty 25% or more market share would be nice. It might be a while down the road, but it’ll happen again someday.

So, how about you? what do you hate about Apple?

Now that I’m using SpiritedAway my desktop is always nice and clean. There is at most only one application taking up desktop real estate at a time, unless I need others. The rest of my open unused programs get automatically hidden to the dock. This has really helped me stay focused. But it’s also brought the need for improved application switching. One of the downfalls of Apple’s default Apple+Tab is that it only allows you to switch to an application. If you have multiple windows open within one application then Apple+Tab just chooses a window and hopefully its the one you wanted. Witch is an improved Apple+Tab interface that does let you choose which window you’d like to switch to!

As you can see in the screenshot Witch gives you much more information than the default Apple+Tab. On the left Witch displays the name of the open applications, on the right the title of the application window, and in the center the icon of the application. The interface allows you to quickly find what window in which application you’d like to open. Neat huh?

Witch is a simple preference pane (you can find it in the System Preferences) with lots of options to customize its functionality. The preference pane is divided into 3 pages of options. Triggers, Behavior, and Other or as I like to call them… Keystrokes, Functionality, and Look & Feel.

I really didn’t change many of the default Witch options other than some of the Appearance configs. Witch runs great as it’s installed, but with some options tweaking I’m sure that it would be even more awesome!

Don’t be shy about installing Witch. You can give Witch a different keystroke combination than the default Apple+Tab. This way you can use both and figure out ‘witch’ you like better :)

Maybe I’m the only one, but I never get sick of the “I’m a Mac and I’m a PC” commercial parodies. Could it be because Mac vs PC is like modern day Spy vs Spy? Anyways, this commercial has a a different sort of twist on the popular Get A Mac campaign. It gives John Hodgman and Justin Long the boot and introduces their South Park counterparts.

Now if you know a bit about the history between Apple and South Park you might think this video came from South Park Studios. But it didn’t! The video was infact created as the final project for a multimedia production class at California State University by a student known on YouTube as huber7. If you ask me, Matt and Trey need to give this guy a call, as I wouldn’t mind seeing his stuff in an official South Park episode.

Infact, since I found it it’s been one of my favorite behind the scenes utilities. In a nutshell, SpiritedAway automatically hides (Apple+H) inactive applications. I usually end up with a dozen applications/windows open after a half hour or so (ADD?) and I can’t hardly think, let alone focus on my current project. If this sounds familiar then you need to install SpiritedAway!

SpiritedAway is a lightweight application that resides in your menu bar. It’s usage is pretty strait forward, and the application pretty much dose everything for you. There are a few things that you can configure though. By clicking on the SpiritedAway menu bar icon you’ll be prompted with the following menu.

With this menu you can choose whether SpiritedAway is active or inactive. While inactive it won’t hide any unused applications for you. You can also choose which applications you don’t want SpiritedAway to ever hide. Configuring the preferences is just as simple.

The only change I made to the default preferences was to check the add LoginItem button so that SpiritedAway launches when I reboot OS X (which rarely happens). But, if you’d like you can change the amount of time an application must be inactive before SpiritedAway hides it.

At first it might be a little weird seeing background windows disappearing, but I assure you that you’ll appreciate it! Having a clean desktop always helps me work better. One thing that might be important to note is that the foremost application will never auto hide even if you don’t use. Oh, and best of all SpiritedAway is a free download! I also give it bonus points since the icon reminds me of the ghosts in PacMan :)

I decided that I’m going to take this weeks poll in a different direction. All the polls that I’ve posted in the past have been mostly serious. We need a little splash of Hawaiian shirt Friday around here. So this week I pose the age old question, Pirates or Ninjas?

Now, you may be wondering what this has to do with Macs or Apple for that matter. To be honest, I really don’t know. I leave that to your imagination. Do Pirates and Ninjas relate to Bill Gates and Steve Jobs in some off the wall comparison. Or better yet, which would use a mac? Pirates like the booty and Macs are all about sex appeal. But the sleek Apple design would definitely appeal to a Ninja. Its a toss up. I’d love to hear how you think Pirates and Ninjas relate to Apple/Macs. It’s all up to debate!

Now, on with the results of the last poll…

The previous poll here on Keynote 2 Keynote, pleased me. The results, displayed above, show that the readership here at K2K is quite varried. The readers have owned anywhere from 1 to 5+ Macs. There are even a handful of haters amongst us, don’t worry, I know where they sleep! Anyways, of those who voted, 57% of the readers are total fanatics and have owned 5+ macs. To those of you in this category I present to you the following AppleGeeks comic :)

While staring at my Menu Bar today I thought to myself, there’s got to be a way to move those icons around. I tried the ol’ faithful drag with no luck. Then, as only a true keystroke freak would attempt, I began testing out modifier keys. I began with the normal keys. ctrl… alt… aha! The Apple key did the trick :)

If you feel the need to rearrange your menu bar icons, then simply hold down the command key, click on one of the icons, and drag it to a new position. Neat huh? If you have other menu bar icons from applications like Quicksilver, You Control: Tunes, or Visor you’ll immediately notice that this trick doesn’t always work.

There are two types of Menu Bar icons, the built-in OS X menu bar icons and 3rd party application icons. You may use this trick to rearrange the OS X icons among each other. However, you cannot move the OS X icons into the 3rd party application icon territory. I should also note that you cannot move the Spotlight icon either.

At some point in time you may want to clean up your menu bar a bit and remove any unused icons. The command + drag trick also works for removing icons. Just hold the command key down and drag the icon off the menu bar. You’ll see a small puff of smoke appear as the icon is removed, similar to what happens when you remove an icon from the dock. Be sure that you only remove icons that you really want off your menu bar, because there is no way to easily undo this. If you make a mistake or change your mind you’ll have to go poking around the System Preferences to find the option to turn the icon back on again.

I don’t know how I didn’t run across all this sooner. I’m sure there are long time Mac users that still don’t know this simple trick! I guess that’s why I’m here :)

But something is missing. Your dock just doesn’t jive with everything you’ve got setup. Not even setting the dock up to auto hide will please you. I was in that boat a few weeks ago, and now Mathew, the proud owner of a brand new MacBook is as well. Matt wrote me a quick email today asking for assistance.

I was wondering whether you’d ever come across a way to get the dock background to disappear/become transparent? I can’t seem to find an option anywhere and you seem to be the kinda guy who’d know such things!

Ask and you shall receive Matt :) I use an application created by Unsanity called ClearDock. ClearDock is free, easy, and available as a universal binary. Once ClearDock is installed it’s somewhat hidden. You can find it in the System Preferences and then under Application Enhancer.

At first glance you’ll notice that there are a few options that you can set. If all you care about is a transparent dock background then uncheck the Re-Color The Dock Background check box. That will give you a nice transparent dock like this screenshot. The other features that ClearDock offers are changing the color of the dock’s background, the dock’s border, and the color of the running application’s triangles. With a hint of creativity you can come up with a wild scheme like this :)

Hope this helped Matt!

Luckily the decision isn’t only up to the Time editors. Thats right, you can cast your vote and rate each of the 200 candidates. And guess who made the list? The big kahuna himself, Steve Jobs. Thanks to Macenstine for getting the ball rolling and trying to get the word out to vote for Steve. But if we want to have any chance at winning this thing we need to keep the momentum rolling.

It’s time for you to do your duty and help out our fearless leader! It only takes a few seconds to vote. Go to the Time Magazines voting page and click on Steve Jobs’s name. Then crank the rating up to 100 and click Submit. But wait, there’s more you can do to help the cause! Give all the rest of the candidates ahead of Steve Jobs a rating of 0 :) This should move Steve up the list fairly quickly.

Earlier today Angelina Jolie was 2 spots ahead of el Steve-O, which made me want to crawl under a rock and die. But things can change in a hurry! Steve is now 4 places ahead of her, as he should be. But what really irks me is that J.K. Rowling is rated higher than Steve Jobs. Give me a break… Harry Potter is more influential than the man behind the iPod, iPhone, and the Macintosh? I can stomach Steve not getting first place, but losing to Harry Potter just isn’t right. Get out there and Rock The Vote!

Right when I was sitting down at the computer trying to figure out what to write about a new comment was posted here on Keynote 2 Keynote. The comment from Dave included a question. What a coincidence, I needed something to write about and Dave provided me with an idea for a quick tutorial. Here’s Dave’s question.

Do you know a way to get transmission to automatically start up and download?

I’m guessing that you mean startup automatically when you boot up your Mac? If so you’re in luck Dave. Not only do I know how to automatically startup transmission, but the method will work for any application :)

The bread crumbs lead to the System Preferences and this is where you’ll begin your journey. Once you open the System Preferences you want to click on Accounts, it’s in the System category towards the bottom. Near the top of the Accounts window you’re looking for the button that says Login Items, click that. Note: This tutorial is for OS X 10.4.9, if you are using a previous version of OS X the Login Items may be located somewhere else.

Once you make it to the Login Items window you want to click the + button that’s depicted in the screenshot above. The + button brings up a dialog box which allows you to select a program that you would like to launch at startup. Click Add once you’re finished. At this point you’re 99% finished. If you’d like the application that you are launching at startup to be hidden (ie using the Apple+H keystroke) by default then click the checkbox next to the item. This will keep you desktop nice and clutter free if you end up adding lots of Login Items. Wasn’t that fairly painless? You can now setup any program you’d like to launch when you boot up your mac using these simple instructions.

Now back to Dave’s original question. Transmission is designed to begin downloading as soon as the application is launched. So if you setup Transmission as a Launch Item your torrents should begin downloading as soon as you boot up your Mac! I Hope this answered your question and maybe enlightened a few other readers as well :)

If anyone would like some further reading about Launch Items, MacFixIt.com has a pretty decent Q&A article about the subject.

Just when you thought you’d seen that last of the iProducts another one crops up. This time it’s something for your favorite K9 friend! I imagine that with the lanyard you could throw that bad boy quite a ways for one mean game of fetch. However I think that Apple might need to work on the quality of the plastic used. If the dog in that picture caused all that damage I’d hate to see what would be left after a pitbull got ahold of the iBone.

As far as the circuit board goes I haven’t figured out the use for it yet. Maybe apple has figured out a way to calm even the wildest of beasts with certain musical tracks. Of course those songs would only be available through the iTMS. One version with DRM and the other without. Or even better yet, maybe you’ll be able to control the flavor of the iBone wirelessly with your Bluetooth enabled mac or the iPhone! I’m not normally cruel to animals, but wouldn’t it be awesome to change the flavor of the iBone from Beggin’ to dirty socks mid chew? I think that Apples got a real winner here, lol!

Don’t worry, no iPod Shuffles were harmed in the making of this photograph… oh, uhhh, ok, maybe just one :)
