This commercial was released a few days ago and for some reason I forgot to post a link to it. I’m sure that most of you have run across it by now, but for those of you who haven’t here it is.
This video comes out only a little over a week after principal technology columnist for the Wallstreet Journal, Walt Mossberg, bashes PC manufactures (Sony in particular) for all the ‘free’ trial programs that come preinstalled on new PCs. I wonder if Apple already had this video in the pipeline or if they took a queue from Walt’s complaints?
All the PC’s that I’ve ever owned I’ve built myself and loaded retail versions of Windows on them. So I’ve never experienced the frustration of getting a new PC full of crapware. But I’ve seen my my family deal with it and it’s quite a sad sight.
Windows is enough of a pain in the butt by itself. But when you have software that interferes with the normal opperation of your computer preinstalled, things get hairy real quick. It’s just not right to ship a computer to a consumer with 20+ icons on the desktop and expect them to sort things out.
Luckly, we’re all running Macs and we don’t have to deal with this right? Well, we do get a trial version of Microsoft Office and iWork, but that’s hardly comparable :)
EDIT: After posting this I realized that there wasn’t just one new commercial posted on Apples Website, but three! I guess that’s what I get for just glancing at the page and focusing just on the video :( Anyways, Here’s the other two…

My friend bought his wife a $400 Compaq laptop running Vista. Granted it only had 512MB of RAM, but it took nearly five minutes for it to boot up, and for all of the craplets and their background processes to stop running.
You’ve got the titles of the last two commercial backwards just thought you should know.
I like the trial ware commercial ,very funny, but full disclosure - most Macs come with a trial of iWork and a Microsoft Office test drive. These are of course usually full versions that just only work for a month or so. Clearly the Mac is better about this than the PC, but… there is *some* trial software on Macs.
Galley,
I know what you mean. My in-laws have a Dell Inspiron 6000 and it’s slow as molasses. Just like your friends Compaq it only has 512mb of ram as well. When the computer starts up it has to put stuff on the page file just to load everything. And it was like that out of the box. Quite sad :(
DBL,
Thanks for the tip. It was late last night and must have mis labeled them. Its fixed now.
Marcas,
Your right. MS Office and iWork are two such programs. There are some other things that could also be added to that list, like Quicktime, since it always bugs you to upgrade to pro. But I’d consider the small handful of somewhat hidden trial software on a Mac not that big of a deal compared to Windows Boxes :)
the visuals on this particular commercial are most excellent, although I think there is an advertising error at the end… in which “PC” should have simply said… in a disgusted tone:
annnd, I’m a PC.
reaffirming the big, ungainly stereotype of the PC in society’s mind.
chiat/day, missed by 35% on this one.
You know… I hadn’t thought about that. They missed a big opportunity to drive the point home. The whole “Ahhh ahhhh I forgot something” comment didn’t do much in terms of effectiveness. Your idea is much better in my opinion.
yeah, for some reason it clicked in my head this wasn’t the best “final” response from “PC”. it was anti-climactical… :)
this ad whole series is all about “changing brain connections” in society concerning Windows verses Macs… and overall i think it’s highly effective.
BUT ending on “ahhh I forgot something” is weak, weak indeed, especially since the humor of having a ballooned “PC” is such a one shot deal.

Quictime never bothers me about updating. Just set the system clock twendy or more years into the future and run Quicktime. Click “later” when prompted and Quicktime will wait until later - much, much later. Twenty years into the future.
Not my original idea. I read about it years ago. Somewhere. Wasn’t twenty years ago though. ;)

Wow, neat trick.
I tried it, but I couldn’t get the upgrade window to come up, lol. Next time it pops up I’ll try it mid stride.
Thanks for the tip :)
