Are you web 2.0 millionaire with a dozen macs and another couple dozen outdated models in your basement? Or are you an average joe running your first Mac? I thought it would be nice to find out just how many Macs the readers of Keynote2Keynote have owned. I know that some of you are seasoned veterans, while others just recently made the switch. So enlighten me!
Now, onto the results of the previous poll…

This was sort of how I expected the results to turn out. There were mixed feelings about the AppleTV when it was announced at MacWorld. Even now, after the release of the AppleTV, opinions are so so. I’m still on the fence. While I like the concept of the gadget, I don’t see it as a must have toy. Maybe if I had $299 to spare then I’d consider purchasing one to play with. I think that others might be in the same boat as myself.
I hope the AppleTV doesn’t turn out to be a flop :( I wouldn’t count out the AppleTV just yet. After a few revisions and a couple new feature additions maybe feelings will change and the AppleTV will become a common household appliance. After all, the first gen iPod got mixed reviews… and look where it is now.

I bought my first, a MacBook in Sept. of 2006. Two months later, I bought another for my daughter.
First was a Mac Mini to go alongside a gaming PC. Then I got a MacBook last June and gave the Mini to my parents (Mom loves it). Now I’ve just sold my gaming PC and will be getting a MBP, and Mom gets the MacBook.
I have owned 5.5 macs, 1/2 of a G3 all in one (brother owned the other 1/2), two G3 PB, 2 G4 PB, and now a 24″ iMac (I still have one of the G4 PBs too). I have also bee directly involved in the purchase of six more for other people, an iB G4 for my dad, one for my brothers gf (now wife), a PB G4 for a good friend of mine, and another for my brother, and a MB for each of my two sisters…
I think Apple should start paying me a commission… 10% would be fine, at least I own 20 shares of stock. :)
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again…
Apple really should create a referral program. If you get someone to buy a Mac then you get a dollar amount credit towards your next Apple purchase. Its a win win situation as far as I can see. Sure there would be loop holes here and there, but nothing can be perfect. The program would basically reward people for going out and actively trying to get people to switch to Macs, or buy new ones! What do you think?
Well I can take credit for two new Mac users, at least. :) The folks are thrilled with a Mac Mini G4. My mom has gotten to the point that she’s disappointed she has to use Windows at work, and has been talking up the Mac to her coworkers.
I like the referral program idea… Heck they could just give away a free mac to anyone that makes 10 referrals. When someone buys a mac for the first time they can claim whoever they want to as there “referrer”.
Now if we can just get Steve Jobs to read your blog :)
To make things even easy you could let anyone sign up to the referral program. When they sign up they would choose a login name, which would end up being their referral key. Then, like you said, when someone buys a Mac they are able to put in a referral key. I think the best thing to do would be to credit someone on their next Mac purchase. For some people it might be years before they could get enough referrals for a new Mac. The amount credited would be a percentage of the prices of the Macs that you helped sell. That way you’d get more credit for getting someone to buy a fully loaded Mac Pro than a bottom of the line Macmini. If I knew that I could get a new computer simply by getting others to purchase a Mac I’d make it my full time job!
Wow Nick, thats a great idea!
I’m going to have my marketing team throw around some ideas and see what we come up with. We’re always looking for more koolaid drinkers :p
Oh this is fun! Let’s see…I’ve had a Mac Classic, a Quadra 630 (man I loved that computer), a B&W Duo Laptop (can’t remember the model), then went through a few dark years on the PC side (we will not speak of this)…and then I had a 12″ Powerbook, a 14″ iBook and now a Macbook.
And as far as Mac-vangelism, I have at least 10 converts, probably more like 15. I even signed up another yesterday! Guy Kawasaki would be proud :)
Ok. So I have 7 right now. Guess that makes me a Mac Maniac.
In order:
Mac 512K
Mac SE (Dual Floppy with 80MB drive added internally)
Still have and plan to use as a novelty game machine.
Mac LC II

This years purchasing plans:
Sell iBook and iMac on e-bay to move to all MacTel systems with
iSight built in.
MacBook gets handed down to son.
Daughter gets new loaded MacBook Pro and 20″ plus external monitor
for Graphic Arts college program. Won’t be an Apple display thought
they are too expensive. That Adobe CS3 suite is going to hurt.
Wife gets new 24″ iMac so she can video chat with daughter at school.
Oh yes. Leapord family pack.
And an iPhone if I can get work to cover the data plan.
Life is good in a Mac Family.
It seems that I’m going to have to start buying up some old systems on ebay so I don’t feel like an inadequate Mac fan, lol. You’ve got quite an impressive arsenal Andy. CS3 is going to hurt, especially when you combine it with a new imac and a MBP… OUCH. It sounds like your family would be a prime specimen for a Mac advertisement. I could see the 4 of you standing in a row with a huge pile of Macs behind you. “Meet the ______, we love Macs” hehheheh
It looks like Adam is in the lead as far as converts go though. 15 is quite impressive. It makes my measly one seem pitiful. Can anyone out there have more than 15?
As a member of the Hokie family, I ask for all of your prayers for the families affected today.
I’ve never done an actual count, so I’m going to make a list of the ones I remember:
Performa 630-bought new about 1995, then sold so that I could buy:
Performa 6100, which I returned due to some kind of problem, and bought:
Performa 6200. What a dog! But, it taught me how to troubleshoot/repair/upgrade my own computer. The MB had to be replaced twice.
In 1998 I discovered ebay when looking for parts to repair brother’s IIci. I ended up getting a bunch of used Macs, including:
Mac IIci
Mac IIsi
Quadra 650
Centris 650
Mac IIfx (actually a Mac II that had a motherboard upgrade)
PowerMac 6100 (4 at once from college surplus sale)
Quadra 840av
PowerMac 7100
PowerMac 8100
PowerMac 7500 - still in use with G3 upgrade
PowerMac 7300
PowerMac 7600
PowerMac 8500 - still in use with G3 upgrade
PowerBook 520c
Duo 270c (2)(and 3 DuoDocks)
Duo 2300
PowerBook 5300c (from estate sale, still new in box but actually about 4 years old)
Quadra 610
LC III
Mac SE
Mac Plus (2)
Power Macintosh G3 (beige tower)
Power Macintosh G3 (B&W) - bought used about 6 years ago and has been runnin virtually 24/7 ever since.
iMac g4 800 17″ (flat panel)
MacBook
Umax c600 (2)- 1 I have left is upgraded to G3
Umax c500
So, that’s at least 33 Mac’s I’ve had (there were probably a few more that I forgot). I still have 19 Macs around the house and use 5 of them fairly regularly. The first 3 on the list are the only Macs I ever bought new. The iMac and MacBook were bought refurbished, the rest from ebay or garage sales etc. Anybody want to help me free up some space in the garage?
Jim, have ever thought about putting together a personal Apple/Macintosh museum?
