Delicious And Magnolia IconI used to be an evangelist of all things Google… Blogger Google Mail, Google Reader, and Google Bookmarks. I recently replaced Google Reader with NetNewsWire before that Blogger with WordPress. Lately I’ve been contemplating moving away from Google Bookmarks as well. Both Del.icio.us and Ma.gnolia seem to be good choices.

Del.icio.us seems to be the top dog right now when it comes to online bookmark managment. But I read that Ma.gnolia is Mac friendly. Really I’m on the fence. I can’t decide between the two. I really like how you can share your bookmarks with others!

Thats the main reason that I want to move away from Google Bookmarks. I’d like to provide a feed of my daily Apple related bookmarks in the sidebar of the site. But, Google Bookmarks doesn’t provide any way to externally access your bookmarks.

Thumbs DownIs it just me or does Google tend to be the jack of all trades, but master of none (with the exception of their search engine and adsese)? Thats statement is a little harsh, but it sounds good ;p I used to like the idea of using all the different Google services. But anymore I’m finding that smaller companies that are dedicated to one or just a few products have better offerings.

Anyways… Do any of you use Ma.gnolia or Del.icio.us? I’d love to hear your opinions/experiences with these services!

Thanks for the visit Marshal. I’m one of those nameless RSS statistics on your site :) I find your articles to be top notch.

Wow, Tasty seems pretty sweet. I could get started with social bookmarking and use both Del.icio.us and Ma.gnolia for the time being and pick my favorite down the road when I have a better feel for each services.

    Hey Nick,

I’m a fond user of Del.icio.us myself. Why? Well, I just started using it and didn’t bother to check out Ma.gnolia. I love the simple design Del.icio.us has on it’s website - very sleek and functional. For bookmarking, I use the bookmarklet that Del.icio.us itself provides.

Anyways, hope this is some help to your social bookmarking quest!

    Hi,

Ma.gnolia looks great, but it has no add-on for Firefox or Safari to easily add your bookmarks… Maybe, they work on some, but I did not find it on the website…

I talk about both del.icio.us and Ma.gnolia quite a bit at my blog, but they’re not really the same thing. The big pull, of course, is that both of them let you bookmark links, but it kinda stops there with del.icio.us, but Ma.gnolia adds a social network with it.

When you bookmark a link, you can send it to any of your groups. You join a group, and you can get an RSS feed of all the links other people add to that group. It’s like subscribing to a tag, only each link is vetted by editors to make sure it is what it says it is.

Ya, Ma.gnolia’s rather Mac–friendly, but with 2 million other users, you’ll get all kinds on del.icio.us. If you just wanna bookmark stuff, then del.icio.us is for you. If you want to be part of a community, then you’ll want Ma.gnolia.

Or, you could be like me, and use both.

The more and more and more I research the two thats pretty much the jist of things. I think that I’m probably going to use Tasty so I can use both for a while. Then as time goes on, if I don’t use the social aspect of Ma.gnolia, then I’ll phase it out and stick to del.icio.us. Can you discuss links on Ma.gnolia?

I also use the Tasty App also, because I want to cover all bases ! In time many of these sites change and improve, and the changes are built in and take no action on my part ! I like the design and layout of how my links on Magnolia and I have found that on My Get Clicky Stats I get a lot of hits from Ma.nolia and Squidoo ! Stumble Upon generates more hits from my content than anyone of the above ! The majority of my content is written by a web marketing firm, and I can prove by using professional writers my
stats are elevated ! My apple-of-my-i.com site is being constucted on line and with me adding the two latest article {Ma.gnolia and Mac Journal 4.1]
i got over 6000 hits that day and 630 unique visitors ! I use all the bookmarking sites it only takes maybe an hour a day ! I must explain I
am 71 years old from past Marketing exoerinece I have found to expose something you have to hit it on all bases ! Righr now as the Kids would Say
Social bookmarking is hot, next week it may change ! I really am glad to
see the response to the Ma.gnolia article it was written for me by Joe Taylor Jr at revenflo.com ! I really did not answer your question but I never phase out of any thing as long as I see Results ! Marshal

lol, but FoxMarks doesn’t let you publicly share your bookmarks, or at least I don’t think they do.

In an act of extremely–thought–out responses, figured I’d answer the question…after I forgot about it a couple of times, then figured I need to get some of the 38 browser tabs closed.

I’m not sure why, but people seem to think that del.icio.us is a social network. It approximates something like that with the shared bookmarks and “network,” but you’re doing little more than agreeing with somebody else.

I thought about this on my own site last year. If all you’re doing is copying bookmarks, what do you need another service for? WordPress offers this nifty bookmarklet that lets you do the same thing as the del.icio.us bookmarlet does, and you’re sending traffic from your site instead of del.icio.us. That’s why, when I came up with my link blog, I used my site, not del.icio.us.

One of the oddest things I saw in the Ma.gnolia forums was a request for daily blog posting. Somebody wanted to post her links to her blog…so people could comment on them. If you want people to comment on your links, why not just post them on your site?

I’m not gonna tell ya what to do, and I’m not a fan of instaposts, but I’d prefer to see a del.icio.us daily blog posting to a constant stream of one–liners.

I moved to Ma.gnolia originally because it looked better (ooh, shiny), had a couple more features (cached pages, bookmark pictures), but I learned that the real strength of it is in the groups. I get more, filtered material from groups that I’ve ever gotten from the subscriptions on del.icio.us. That’s what’s kept my interest.

And that’s my rant on social bookmarking. Also, for no apparent reason, I’ve attained the level of featured linker, so I may just be biased one way or the other.
