Onyx Review

Onyx IconI’ve been meaning to try out OnyX for quite some time, but haven’t had the time to do it till now. I wish I would have made the time for this awesome piece of software earlier. OnyX gives access to many hidden features of OS X and provides the user with great maintenance tools. With the brushed metal theme OnyX looks and feels like a great OS X application.

OnyX doesn’t just look impressive, its got great horsepower under the hood. A bunch of the settings that OnyX gives the user access to are only otherwise available via the command line. The maintenance tools should be included with OS X itself. Here’s a short list of some of my favorite features of OnyX.

Onyx Features

  • Customize OS X’s built in screenshot utility. Change the default image format from .png to a wide range of other formats.
  • Impress your friends with a unique effect and place an animation as your Desktop Picture! There are other tools that provide the functionality to do this, Quartz Desktop and QCDesktop are two such tools.
  • The tip I provided a few days back that allowed you to have semi transparent icons in your dock can be enabled with OnyX. No more terminal commands :)
  • Some of the great maintenance abilities of OnyX include cleaning internet items (cookies, history, form info, etc), removal of system caches, and tidying up huge amounts of log files.
  • Advanced Trash can disposal. OnyX can not only empty the trash, but write over the contents of the trash 3 times to completely erase any trace that files ever existed!

Onyx Options Window

The above list is only a small subset of what can be accomplished with OnyX. Although amazing, OnyX isn’t perfect. One suggestion I would give the developers would be to add mouse over descriptions to the options that can be set. Most settings are fairly strait forward, but a few a a tad cryptic. Other than that I have no complaints, especially for a FREE piece of software! To experience the full power of this awesome tool you’ll need to download it for yourself.

You can download OnyX here.

Yeah, you were one of the ones that introduced me to Onyx. I’m really loving the animated Desktop. I got the flurry screensaver running on my Desktop and it’s sweet!

What are you using for a browser? I seem to end up running both FF and safari.

Thanks, for some reason when I put a link in the first paragraph of an article sometimes it acts weird. I edited the post and placed a download link at the bottom of the page to temporaroly fix the problem. I’ll have to look into it.

As far as a browser goes. I mainly use Firefox, but also use Safari here and there. I’ve heard great things about Camino but have yet to give it a try. If you end up giving it a shot let me know what you think :)

Nice! I like the theme. Simple, yet artistic. I forgot you said that some of the stuff on your blog wasn’t yours and I kept trying to click on it. The only thing that I could suggest would be to see if there is a way to post comics. Blogs are sort of a always a work in progress. I’m always tweaking something or altering the positions of things. The most important thing is to just not get discouraged and keep at it. :)

i am gonna keep at it, i just have not had time to finish it up..
after i am done with the normal updates, i will be doing a daily or weekly or as needed update.
do you know where i can find a good utility for taking screenshots on the mac?

OS X has the ability to take screenshots built in.

Shift Apple 3 = Take a picture of the whole screen.
Shift Apple 4 = Allows you to make a selection of what you would like to take a picture of.
Shift Apple 4 then the spacebar = Take a picture of the selected window/icon.

The screenshots will be saved onto your desktop. If you’d like them to be placed in the clipboard instead just add the CTRL key to the above combinations.

There is also a program that comes pre-installed called Grab. Its located in /Applications/Utilities/ . This program does all of the above and also allows you to do timed screenshots and control how you’d like the pointer to be displayed.
