Site Review - iBoughtAMac.com

This weeks site in the spotlight is iBoughtAMac.com. I’ve been reading iBAM, as Brent Spore refers to his site, off and on for a little over a month. If it wasn’t for this Digg entry I probably would have never ran across Brent’s site :) I just happened to be looking in the right place at the right time.

IBoughtAMac Preview

Brent, like a lot of Mac converts these days was a long time PC user. One day he found himself at the mercy of advanced podcasts and decided to throw in the towel. The rest is history. Since that glorious day in November when Brent made the switch, he’s been working hard to make iBAM a safe haven for new Mac users. Here’s a short description of what iBAM has to offer…

iBoughtAMac aims to deliver a well rounded collection of information for the first time Mac user. You’ve got questions, iBoughtAMac hopes to have the answers. If, after browsing the archives your question has not yet been answered, shoot us a friendly email…

Beyond good content (tutorials, software reviews, and troubleshooting) iBam has some great contests. Earlier this month Brent offered an iPod Shuffle as a prize for his Review My Site Contest. I really should have written up this review earlier, but I guess thats the way the cookie crumbles. Turn the page a few weeks and Brent has another great contest going. This time around a much more expensive prize, an AppleTV! To get your hands on the prize you need to be the talented person to win the iBoughtAMac logo contest. So get your design on and win yourself a new shiny AppleTV!

As if the chance to win an AppleTV isn’t enough… Your design will be judged by a “celebrity” panel of judges, including: Justine Ezarik, Paul Stamatiou, Kenny Saunders, Shaun Andrews, Jonathan Snook, Dan Rubin, Nicole Wopperer, Derek Punsalan, and Brent himself.

If you’ve recently bought a new Mac, or plan on doing so soon head on over to iBoughtAMac.com and have a look around. While you’re there tell Brent that Large Marge sent you… eeerrr I mean Nick Young, lol :)

Del.icio.us Or Ma.gnolia… I’m On The Fence

Delicious And Magnolia IconI used to be an evangelist of all things Google… Blogger Google Mail, Google Reader, and Google Bookmarks. I recently replaced Google Reader with NetNewsWire before that Blogger with WordPress. Lately I’ve been contemplating moving away from Google Bookmarks as well. Both Del.icio.us and Ma.gnolia seem to be good choices.

Del.icio.us seems to be the top dog right now when it comes to online bookmark managment. But I read that Ma.gnolia is Mac friendly. Really I’m on the fence. I can’t decide between the two. I really like how you can share your bookmarks with others!

Thats the main reason that I want to move away from Google Bookmarks. I’d like to provide a feed of my daily Apple related bookmarks in the sidebar of the site. But, Google Bookmarks doesn’t provide any way to externally access your bookmarks.

Thumbs DownIs it just me or does Google tend to be the jack of all trades, but master of none (with the exception of their search engine and adsese)? Thats statement is a little harsh, but it sounds good ;p I used to like the idea of using all the different Google services. But anymore I’m finding that smaller companies that are dedicated to one or just a few products have better offerings.

Anyways… Do any of you use Ma.gnolia or Del.icio.us? I’d love to hear your opinions/experiences with these services!

You know that feeling when your day just isn’t going right? There’s that gut wrenching moment when your beloved Gadget takes its last volt. Just because you might enjoy sky diving or swimming, it doesn’t mean your Mac does! Over the last few days I rustled up 10 of the worst Mac accident pictures that I could find. I ran across dropped, burnt, drowned and even one purposely crushed Mac.

Take a look at what happens when good Macs behave badly!

New Poll - Will You Buy An AppleTV?

Since the AppleTV was recently released I thought it would be nice to find out who bought one or who is planning on buying one.  I’m still on the fence.  Can’t decide if I really need one or not.  How about you?

I left the last poll, “When Will You Upgrade To Leopard?”, posted for almost 2 weeks.  It seems that most of you guys/gals will be upgrading to Leopard on release day.  Although its probably a joke, there were 2 people who are sticking to OS 9!  If its true thats awesome :)  Someone’s gotta keep the old school OS alive!

Looking back at the Leopard poll I wish I would have added another option.  There wasn’t an option for upgrading a few months after release.  Had there been, I imagine that the results would have turned out a bit differently.

Thanks to everyone who cast their vote!  Make sure to check out the new poll :)

Show Off Your Mac Setup In The MacBattle Arena

MacBattle HeaderDo you ever find yourself aimlessly surfing the internet? I don’t know if its procrastination or just my love for the world wide web, but I often run across some really cool stuff. Last night I ran across MacBattle. You know those 331 page forum threads full of pictures of Mac setups?  Well MacBattle takes this idea 1 step further and puts 2 pictures head to head in a Mac setup death match (ok, maybe not that gruesome, but fun none the less!)

MacBattle Preview

One the front page you’ll see two images side by side. Simple click on the picture that you think has the sweetest setup, this votes for that setup. Upon voting you an see the win percentage of each image. If can’t decide which of the two is the coolest then just click the ‘Consider it a Draw’ button between the images.

Best Picture on MacBattleIf you’re curious what the most successful pictures are, MacBattle has a Top 10 list. The picture that holds the #1 spot is a dual display setup with an iBook off to the side. As time passes I think that the picture to the left will float to the top and dethrone the dual display entry. I wish those were my Macs :) If you think you can do better or just want to play around go ahead and upload your setup and see how you fair.

If your looking for another fun way to kill 5-10 minutes check out GoogleBattle and find out which set of keywords have more results than others.  My highest result is 8,500,000,000.  If someone anyone finds a keyword with more results than that I’ll post what word I used.  Hummm… this could get fun :)
